I'm gonna break format a bit on the blog just to highlight something slightly personal. So I'm a kid from Oak Cliff which many know is a suburb in the southern part of Dallas. And if you know me you know that I'm an avid "Hip Hop Head". With that said I was heavily surrounded by southern hip hop and I loved it! Everything from 8Ball and MJG to UGK and the Geto Boys.
But because of my appetite for music I was always looking for different sounds and artists no matter the genre or format. My first job was working at a Kroger as a bag boy and on my breaks I would grab a magazine from the magazine section and sit down and read. I grabbed "The Source" everyday which at that time in the early 90's was the premier magazine for hip hop, particularly from the east coast. It was then that I was introduced to Nas and his magnum opus "Illmatic". This for me opened the flood gates to everything that was coming out of New York. Wu Tang, B.I.G.,Beatnuts, Gangstarr, ATCQ, Jay-Z and on and on. Because I was in Dallas during this time. I was only one of a handful of kids who really got into this side of hip hop. In my neighborhood if it wasn't coming out of the south or from the West Coast (which was dominant at the time) it wasn't getting any play. So I found myself listening to this by myself mostly. So with the 20th Anniversary of this release I find myself somewhat nostalgic. So much so that I had to pen this in remembrance "I sip the Dom P wachin Ghandi til I'm charged/And writing in my book of rhymes all the words passed the margin".
